Jefferson Ahead in the Latin Press poll for the Best Sportsman of the Year of Latin America and the Caribbean. 
CUBA, 04/12/2007. Just as when he competed, Jefferson Perez is out in front and alone in the polling for the best sportsman of the year. Ecuadorian race walker Jefferson Perez received another vote today and is out in front in the yearly poll by Latin Press to select the best sportsmen of Latin America and the Caribbean. Perez was selected by the Cuban radio station Jaruco Radio, thus accumulating six votes, one more than Chilean tennis star Fernando Gonzalez, with whom Jefferson shared first place among male sportsmen in 2007.
This poll has been held since 1964, and participants can send their votes by electronic mail to deportes@prensa-latina.cu or directly to the Latin Press correspondents in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.
The poll awards prizes to the best sportsmen and sportswomen, to the outstanding team, and confers diplomas of recognition to the 10 highest in the polls after the winners. Voting closes Thursday, the 20th of December of 2007, and the results will be announced the following day.
In the 2006 poll, the winners were the Cuban 800 meter runner Zulia Calatayud, world champion in the 800 meters, the Venezuelan baseball player, Johan Santana, and the Brazilian men’s volleyball team, with votes coming from 115 media sources in 19 countries.
Among the winners in the Latin Press annual poll in the 43 preceding editions were the Mexicans, Felipe “Tibio” Muñoz (swimming) and Daniel Bautista (track and field), and the Brazilian athletes, Joao Carlos de Oliveira and Joaquim Carvalho Cruz.
Other award-winners were the Argentine soccer star Diego Armando Maradona and the Brazilian, Ronaldo, the Ecuadorian race walker Jefferson Perez (1996), the Brazilian race car driver Ayrton Senna, the Colombian cyclist Martín “Cochise” Rodríguez and the Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa.
